The Culture and Art Office of the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acernoin collaboration with Alfano I Foundationhe organized “The ancient inscription of the Cathedral of Salerno: on the trail of the Armenians in Salerno and Italy”, initiative aimed at enhancing the engraving in the Armenian language found on the left jamb of the central door of the Cathedral of Salerno. The appointment is for Saturday 25 May 2024, at the Portico del Duomo, at 11.30 am. For the occasion, the bilingual booklet will be presented which tells and describes the meaning of the inscription left by an Armenian pilgrim who came to Salerno to venerate the relics of Saint Matthew the Apostle. Furthermore, the inauguration of one is scheduled descriptive column which will allow visitors to interpret the engraving.
This was followed by the conference held in the Cathedral by the Archeparch of Constantinople of the Armenians, Monsignor Levon Zekiyan, a luminary of Armenian history and spirituality who will focus on the presence of the Armenian people in Salerno and Italy. The meeting will be attended by the Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, His Excellency Monsignor Andrea Bellandithe Mayor of Salerno Vincenzo Napolithe theologian, as well as promoter of the event, the professor Lorella Parente and the Vice President of the Alfano I Foundation, Don Ugo De Rosa.
“The Conference of Monsignor Boghos Lévon Zékiyan, Turkish Catholic Archbishop and, from 21 March 2015, Archbishop of Constantinople of the Armenians, will be held on the occasion of the presentation of a brochure, edited by the Director of the Culture and Art Office of the Archdiocese, Professor Lorella Parente , which offers the translation of the inscription written in Armenian, probably the work of a pilgrim devoted to Matthew, the Holy Apostle, whose remains rest in the Cathedral – he announces HE Monsignor Bellandi – The work of transcription and translation, obviously complex, is due to the profound expertise of Professor Don Matteo Crimellaprofessor of Sacred Scripture and scholar of ancient languages at the Theological Faculty of Milan”.
“Undoubtedly, this work contributes to offering a further element of knowledge and valorization of that priceless heritage of art, spirituality and culture of which our Cathedral has been a fascinating guardian and testimony for almost two millennia. – he added the Archbishop of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno – And which we intend to make even more accessible not only to the faithful of Salerno, but also to the increasingly numerous tourists and visitors who flock to visit the place every day more sacred of our city,” he concluded HE Monsignor Bellandi.
