Cruise ship does not moor in Olbia, technical table convened

Meeting on the two cruise ship moorings that did not take place in Olbia.

A technical table has been convened following the failure of the MSC Orchestra cruise ship to land in the port of Olbia for two calls. This morning the commander of the Port Authority of OlbiaCaptain of Vessel Giorgio Castronuovomet, in its offices, the leaders of the Port System Authority of the Sea of Sardinia, to analyze the causes and seek possible solutions.

On both occasions (April 23 and May 3) the ship, now close to entering the port, communicated to the Coast Guard Operations Room that it wanted to give up mooring in consideration of the particularly intense wind and the absence of a second tug that could assist with the maneuver.

The two administrations (Maritime Authority and AdSP), with the precious contribution of the local Pilot Corps and the Mooring Group, have started, some time ago, important discussions with the company (Moby SpA) concessionaire of the towing service, in order to evaluate the adaptation of the tugboat fleet to the changed operational needs of the port of Olbia. This stakeholder consultation procedure was started a few months ago, in view of the increase in frequency of
extreme weather phenomena (mistral wind – above all – with gusts of up to 45 knots) and the increase in the size of ships mooring in the Gallura port.

During the meeting, the critical issues that led the shipping company MSC to consider the mooring unsafe were analysed, while at the same time seeking a solution that is as shared as possible which, in the short term, allows for greater safety conditions to be guaranteed to the so-called. giants of the sea during mooring and unmooring maneuvers in the presence of particularly adverse weather and sea conditions.

The Moby company shared the concerns expressed by the parties involved, Maritime Authority, AdSP and technical-nautical services, ensuring maximum commitment to finding an additional nautical vessel, with adequate technical characteristics, so as to enhance the service offered to moored units and/or arriving/departing. “The security of the port is an absolute priority for us – declares Commander Castronuovo – safety as a generator of value, as an added value of a port, is an essential component of every production process, after all because a safer and more professional port is certainly a more attractive port for large investors and capable of attracting new traffic and consolidate existing ones”.
