cleaning and reclamation work is underway on the Ciappetta-Camaggio Canal

I am underway cleaning and reclamation works on the Ciappetta-Camaggio Canal, arranged by the municipal administration – Department of Quality of Life by the Autonomous Urban Hygiene Service. The works were approved by the Municipal Council in October 2023 (resolution n. 185), for which maintenance and cleaning of the state-owned surface water property was funded by the Puglia Region. In recent days the workers of the specialized company in charge of the work are working along the entire course of the Canal. A canal, we remember, which crosses the entire territory of the Municipality of Andria. The hydrographic basin, with a total extension of approximately 160 km2, covers the hilly part of the Corato countryside, in the central part the municipal territory of Andria including the town, while downstream the municipal territory of Barletta.

The Ciappetta – Camaggio it is the collector of the hydraulic network of various smaller canals present in the area. However, for some years it has been experiencing a situation of degradation and hygienic health damage which, in some places, also jeopardizes public safety. In fact, in addition to the function of collecting water, the canal has suffered over time indiscriminate abandonment of waste of all types: it is possible to find, along the route, from car carcasses, to household appliances, tyres, plastic containers, glass, old furniture, wooden platforms, plastic bags with waste of various kinds, etc… as a good part of its route is in the territory extra-urban and despite the installation of deterrent systems.

Hence the need for immediate and constant intervention in order to maintain the course of the canal, through cleaning operations of the riverbed in order to protect the defense of the soil and to guarantee better efficiency of its hydraulic functioning, as well as improving the conditions general safety and security of people. The work will continue in the coming weeks.
