the Black Feathers left on foot with mules for Vicenza

The Grappa mules traveling towards Vicenza. This morning, the ANA Monte Grappa Section greeted Aldo Serraiotto’s group and his mules leaving for the National Gathering in Vicenza, which will take place this weekend. The Deputy Vice President Alessandro Zarpellon and the Vice President Attilio Dalla Valle wished the group a good journey, underlining the importance of this initiative to preserve the memory and traditions of the Alpini.

Mules, which have always been used to transport food, equipment and ammunition in the mountains, are an irreplaceable symbol of Alpine identity. Their presence in Vicenza will be an opportunity to make the public aware of their fundamental role in the military and civil history of our country.

The ANA Monte Grappa Section has always been committed to enhancing Alpine traditions and promoting the values of solidarity and brotherhood. The mule journey to Vicenza is an initiative that fits perfectly into this commitment and which contributes to spreading knowledge and love for the mountains and Alpine history.

We wish Aldo Serraiotto and his group a good trip and a fruitful stay in Vicenza. We are certain that their presence will be welcomed with great enthusiasm by the citizens.

Alpine mules: history, tradition and passion

In 1993 the Italian army auctioned off the last mules in service. These tireless quadrupeds, which had always been used to transport food, equipment and ammunition in the mountains, were now destined to disappear.

But in Vittorio Veneto, a group of passionate Alpine soldiers did not give up. They purchased some mules and founded the Baggage Department, a living museum to preserve the memory of these animals and their precious role in the army.

Today, the six mules of the Department – Fina, Iso, Iroso, Laio, Leo and Mila – are looked after by Giovanni Salvador and a group of Alpine soldiers. Led by their drivers, they participate in parades, mountain walks and excursions, keeping the Alpine tradition alive.

Although they are no longer used for heavy work, Vittorio Veneto’s mules are far from retired. They are symbols of history, tradition and passion, and their presence is an invaluable value for the community.

The Baggage Department is an example of how commitment and dedication can preserve an important piece of our history. A warning not to forget the past and to pass on the value of memory and traditions to new generations.
