The title of the review is: “The great exhibitions of human photography”, it will start in just over a week, will occupy the spring/summer 2024 period, and will then continue in the following two years within the same time frame. It will be created by Francesco Mazza’s Cine Sud, which requested and obtained the free patronage of the municipal administration, approved by the council chaired by the mayor Nicola Fiorita on the proposal of the councilor for culture, Donatella Monteverdi.

The centerpiece of the event will be the premises named after Coriolano Paparazzo, which Cine Sud itself owns on Corso Mazzini and which in the past have hosted unforgettable high-profile exhibitions, starting with the one dedicated to Mattia Preti. On May 17th, at the beginning of the exhibition, the space will host the solo exhibition of the photographer Pino Bertelli entitled “Against the war – Portraits of denied childhood”. Following, on 7 June, it will be Francesco Malvolta’s turn with “Popoli in motion”. Finally, the third appointment will be with “Nega Project – In search of Beauty” with shots by Nino Bartuccio. All exhibitions will be free to enter.

But the Cine Sud exhibition will also be much more. The idea, in fact, is to combine the photographic exhibitions with other initiatives dedicated to different art forms, as well as training courses, conventions and conferences for the presentation of books, readings, theatrical pieces, musical events, themed contests, open to schools of all levels, cultural associations and citizens. A multiplicity of expressions, therefore, the details of which will be illustrated in a press conference to be held in the next few days.

“A proposal that convinced us right from the start – said councilor Monteverdi – for its contents and for the basic idea that underlies it, which is to reflect on the human element but do so not in an episodic manner but through a broad container that pushes us to build, on a personal and collective level, a thought that remains, settles and helps us to be better. We were then convinced – Monteverdi continued – by the proposal to set up everything in the historic city centre, in the space that was once the hall of the Centrale hotel owned by Coriolano Paparazzo, a name that became famous thanks to Federico Fellini, Ennio Flaiano and the film La Dolce Vita. An immortal piece of cinema history, also built in our city.”

Exploring the meaning of the event, Francesco Mazza for his part said that “in a world that evolves too quickly, there are too many frustrations and sacrifices to which one must submit and which usually fall largely on the last, the defenceless, the weak . We run too much and badly but perhaps we can try to slow down this drift that seems to never end; to do this we need thoughts and ways that belong to us, belong to us citizens of one of the many souths of the earth, because the philosophy of meridian thought shapes us despite everything and we can take advantage of it to learn to observe instead of judging, to think instead of believing. And who knows, this might also help us to roll up our sleeves more easily to try to build a better city. Catanzaro is not apathetic – concluded Mazza. Maybe she is deeply disappointed by too many broken promises but only those who don’t want to don’t see the desire there is to be there and that just needs to be transformed into the desire to do.”
