‘Senology at the Centre’, the second edition starts from Gallarate

The second edition of the Senologia al centro project starts again in the province of Varese, the spotlight on oncological prevention will be turned on in Gallarate next 10, 11, 12 May in Via Verdi at the corner of Piazza della Libertà.

The official inauguration and the symbolic ribbon cutting are scheduled for Saturday 11 May at 11am in the presence of numerous authorities. Representatives from the civil, religious and military world will participate, as well as representatives and operators from the medical-health sector. Representatives of the LILT Provincial Association of Varese and the working team of the ‘Senology at the centre’ project will also be present.

An event aimed at raising awareness among the female population – and not only – on a topic of fundamental and primary importance such as the prevention of breast cancer.

Precisely for this reason, the Gnodi Group with the support of Mobile System srl in collaboration with LILT – Provincial Association of Varese provides a mobile health unit intended for preventive diagnosis. The clinic used, with a renewed graphic design for 2024, consists of an entrance area dedicated to reception and two examination rooms, equipped with a latest generation mammography and ultrasound system.

The objective of the initiative is to make breast clinic visits, breast ultrasounds and possibly mammograms accessible free of charge to women, upon reservation, directly in the square of their city.

The fight against cancer prevention is supported by the joint commitment of doctors, Lilt volunteers and the Senology Team at the centre, promoters of an information service that aims to generate awareness for the defense of one’s health.
Up to now, the battle against breast cancer has achieved important successes thanks to the dedication of volunteers and associations, pillars of the Italian healthcare system. However, it is essential to intensify efforts to further improve the results obtained.

The latest data provided by the Ministry of Health confirm that breast cancer is the most frequent female cancer, representing 30% of all tumors in women. Furthermore, breast cancer seems destined to rise in the next two decades, on average by 0.2% per year and to strike at an increasingly young age.
To ensure that the battle against breast cancer becomes victorious, it is essential to know the risk factors of the disease, which, as Lilt points out, cause 20% of diagnoses: hormone replacement therapy, obesity, poor physical activity, poor fruit consumption and fresh vegetables, alcohol intake and smoking.
In addition to healthy lifestyle habits, an indispensable weapon to have is prevention. The Italian League for the Fight against Cancer reiterates the role of the culture of prevention as a way of life, so that all women undergo breast examinations, advising them from the age of 18 to practice monthly self-exams; at the age of 30 to carry out an annual breast examination with ultrasound examination; at the age of 40 to undergo adequate clinical-instrumental checks (breast examination, ultrasound – mammography).
The “Senology at the centre” project aims to contribute to strengthening this culture, disseminating the topic of prevention to citizens as widely as possible.

The Mayor of Gallarate, Andrea Cassani, declared: “Thanks to the “Senology at the centre” project, for the second year in a row it will be possible to access free mammography visits and screening, diagnostic tools of vital importance in the fight against breast cancer.
I would like to reiterate the importance of this initiative and invite all women who fall within the indicated age range to take advantage of the opportunity and book their appointment. Your health is precious and should never be neglected.
I would like to express thanks to the Gnodi Group, with Mobile System Srl, to LILT and to all those who contributed to making this initiative possible. Without your support and generosity, we would not be able to offer this important service to our community.”

The Councilor for Educational Activities Claudia Mazzetti declared: “As the Municipal Administration, it is with great pleasure that we sponsor this initiative and we are happy to participate in the project which allows the citizens of Gallara to have free access to breast examinations, breast ultrasounds and mammograms.
We would like to express our thanks to the organizers for their commitment and dedication to promoting health and prevention. So far, in the fight against breast cancer, important goals have been achieved thanks to the invaluable commitment of volunteers and associations, who represent an essential part of the Italian social and healthcare system. However, it is crucial that we step up our efforts to achieve further progress in the battle against this disease.”

LILT Varese President Ivanoe Pellerin declared: “LILT has always been in the field to fight oncological pathology and on many occasions I have reported how the pandemic has slowed down and sometimes stopped checks, screening and follow ups. I remember that cancer is the potentially most preventable chronic pathology and today also more “treatable” than in the past. In women, the most frequent tumors are breast cancer (55,700 cases), colorectal cancer (22,100), lung cancer (14,600), endometrial cancer (10,200) and thyroid cancer (8,700) So we know well that breast cancer is the most frequent cancer. We also know that the main risk factors are represented by: age, reproductive factors, hormonal factors, lifestyle and family history. However, another enemy is lurking in the female world. In fact, what causes many concerns is overweight which affects 33% of adults together with obesity which affects 10%, without forgetting sedentary lifestyle which reaches 31%. Another danger that concerns the female world (in addition to the male one) is the habit of smoking present in approximately 25% of the population. A habit that is significantly increasing among women. I remember that obese people have a higher risk not only of developing breast cancer but also of experiencing other ailments. For example, the more than 70% chance of developing monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, a benign blood condition that may precede multiple myeloma. It should be remembered that correct lifestyles can prevent up to 30% of new diagnoses of oncological diseases.
The good numbers. For all neoplastic pathologies, survival is currently almost 60% in men (previously it was 54%) and 65% for women. It’s truly a great success. Therapies for oncological pathologies in general and for breast cancer in particular are increasingly precise and effective. The next truly possible goal is to make the neoplastic disease a chronic disease, that is, a disease that allows you to survive by following the appropriate therapies. The entire LILT is truly committed to this objective.”

Irene Mesisca, General Director of the Gnodi Group, declared: “We are very happy and proud of the restart of the Senologia al Centro tour in the city of Gallarate, sensitive and attentive to the mission of our project.
In particular, I would like to thank the Varese companies that have embraced Senology at the center by integrating and strengthening their social and CSR objectives with the welfare project; It is encouraging to see how more and more companies are becoming aware of the importance of this topic, thanks also to a new culture of well-being that is spreading.
Our technical and logistical team, in two years of development and improvement of the format, is now able to deal with every type of request and satisfy needs both in the diagnostic field, through the provision of our mobile units and doctors, both in the training and information fields for employees”.

During the press conference to present the tour, the Councilor for Welfare (Social Services, Area Plans, Health) Chiara Allai also spoke with a heartfelt testimony in which she recounted her experience with Senology at the center during the visit carried out in the last edition and the Councilor for Municipal Services Picchetti Stefania who further strengthened the value of the female team of the municipal administration alongside all women.
The meeting ended with greetings and thanks from Ivan Gnodi, founder of the Gnodi Group.
