Trieste U-turn on port taxes

Despite a discussion table started some time ago, the measure with which the Trieste Port System Authority decided to increase port and treasury taxes seems to have taken the Julian operators by surprise.

This can be seen from the decree with which the ADSP “temporarily suspended” the price increases today, “taking note that on 6 May 2024, a meeting was held with the port operators at the headquarters of this Port System Authority, from which the need to establish a technical table emerged, with the aim of

carry out in-depth studies that also take into account the particular economic situation, in order to arrive at solutions that are as shared as possible”.

In essence there would have been a misunderstanding, given that, the president of the organization Zeno D’Agostino explained to SHIPPING ITALY, the discussion had already been conducted in the weeks preceding the adoption of the ‘suspended’ decree. The intention, however, “also in light of better-than-expected ADSP budgets” would be to keep the provision in place for a couple of months, examining its most delicate aspects in greater depth, starting from the fact that the increases would impact much more on Monfalcone than on not on Trieste, the latter benefiting from the free port regime.

It is therefore possible that, following the technical discussion, the body will make distinctions between the increases, both on a product and geographical basis. The decision, in any case, will not be taken by D’Agostino, who as is known is leaving the ADSP.
