Calabria comes in 17th place, gaining one from the last edition, in the ranking drawn up in the ninth edition of the report “Le Equilibriste, maternity in Italy” by Save the Children, which takes stock of the challenges that women in Italy have to face when they choose to become mothers. The study also includes the Mothers’ Index, developed by Istat for Save the Children, a ranking of the Italian regions where it is easier for mothers to live. At a national level, this year too, the Index indicates the Autonomous Province of Bolzano as leading the mothers-friendly territories, followed by Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, while Basilicata brings up the rear, preceded at the bottom of the ranking by Campania and from Sicily.

This year the Index of mothers by region is the result of an analysis based on 7 dimensions: demographics, work, representation, health, services, subjective satisfaction and violence, for a total of 14 indicators from different sources of the national statistical system. The reference value is equal to 100. Compared to it, higher values ​​represent a more favorable territory for mothers; lower values ​​show a less “friendly” territory towards them.

As regards the demographic area, Calabria is positioned in the upper part of the index, confirming itself in fifth place (106.857). In terms of the size of work, Marche (102,488), Piedmont (100,979), Abruzzo (100,504) and Liguria (100,321) occupy the top places in the area. Calabria ranks 17th (85.975), recovering two positions compared to the last edition.

In the area of ​​Representation, relating to the percentage of women in political bodies at local level by region, Calabria remains in 13th place (94.775) compared to the last edition. First is Lazio (134.054), second is Umbria (128.468). In the Health area, Calabria remains last (86,524). The most virtuous is Umbria (118,903), which went from 16th place last year to first thanks to a profound reduction in the infant mortality rate (from 3.23 in 2020 to 1.15 in 2021) and a growth in structures public and private accredited for counseling activities (from 4.2 per 10,000 inhabitants in 2019 to 5.6 in 2022).

Calabria is then in 18th place in terms of services (82,633), gaining one compared to 19th in the last edition, followed by Sicily (76,675), Campania (79,862), Puglia (82,462), regions where the offer of services is more low. The record is held by the Autonomous Province of Trento (131,719) and Valle D’Aosta (125,124).

As regards the area of ​​subjective satisfaction of mothers, Calabria is in 17th place (96,406), the last edition was last (21st).

Finally, Calabria is in 14th place (100.453) in the Violence dimension, losing 4 positions.
