The Vittoria city council changes face. And it will be, for the first time, a predominantly female face. There will be thirteen women present in the courtroom from tomorrow. Eleven male councilors instead.
The two new city councilors: Maria Giovanna Zocco and Giannella Iabichella
Two new city councilors will enter the council chamber for the first time in place of the resigning Salvatore Avola and in place of Giuseppe Cannizzo, doctor, who died ten days ago.
In place of Salvatore Avola, the first of the non-elected people on the PD list will take over the city council, Maria Giovanna Zocco. After the death of the city councilor Giuseppe Cannizzo, Giannella Iabichella will join the city council. She was elected on the “Aiello mayor” list.
Both Avola and Cannizzo were members of the current majority. Avola resigned as councilor, remaining a member of the council and, with his resignation, allowed Fabio Prelati to join the council. In fact, only three members can be present in the council with the dual role of councillor/assessor. Cesare Campailla and Giuseppe Nicastro were present on the council, together with Avola. With the entry of Prelati it was necessary for one of the members to resign.
With tomorrow evening’s session, therefore, the city council will take on a new structure. The two new councilors will take their places on the majority benches and will also have a role in the council commissions. The political groups will have to be reconstituted.
Maria Giovanna Zocco was elected on the Democratic Party list. Nothing could change in the internal balance of the party. The group, to date, is made up of Giuseppe Nicastro and Roberta Sallemi (the latter first elected from another list and then joined the Democratic Party). Giannella Iabichella was elected on the “Aiello mayor” list (now in the council made up of Fabio Prelati and Alessandro Speranza). Some councilors have left the lists where they were elected and are today in the mixed group. The new councilors could make their choices known already in tomorrow’s session.
The presidency of the council is also female: Concetta Fiore and Rosetta Noto
If the council is largely female (even for the highest positions with the president Concetta Fiore and the deputy Rosetta Noto), the council instead has a clear male predominance. The only woman on the council is Francesca Corbino. At the time of the installation of the new council there were also Katya Ferrara and Anastasia Licitra. After their resignations they have always been replaced by men: Salvatore Avola took the place of Katya Ferrara, as representative of Scoglitti and Fabio Prelati, a few days ago, took the place of Anastasia Licitra.
The mayor, Francesco Aiello, made it known that before the end of the year there will still be other changes in the council and that this could allow a rebalancing of the female presence in the administrative team.
