TERNI – The elm tree injured in the summer of 2022 by a whirlwind did not make it. “He died”. The Environment Councilor, Mascia Aniello, he ascertained this in the last few hours and immediately communicated it to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry: «One of the two centuries-old trees in Piazza dell’Olmo has not vegetated and this means that it will certainly have to be cut down». It’s not all. That green monument which gives its name to the square will have to follow a complex process: “Being a restricted tree, a simple municipal authorization will not be enough but at least an expert opinion will be needed.” So it won’t be quick. But nothing in that part of the historic center happens quickly. The proof lies in the fact that for two years now, since that infernal Wednesday 27 July 2022, the square has remained without one of its two “wings”, a spectator of the death of one of its two monumental elms, and nothing more . Since then, since that storm which caused damage of 41 thousand euros to the Municipality of Terni and the removal of one of the two tensile structures (the damaged one) that characterized it since 2014, only criticism has rained down on the poor maintenance of public green areas. Actually no, a series of slaps also rained down on the urban regeneration project signed by the then very young architect Alessio Patalocco (he was 28 years old). A petition was even signed to have the other tensile structure still standing removed as if it had had its day and was no longer needed.
Then the news of the last few hours: the death of one of the two elm trees. «We had noticed for months that he was not in good health – declares Paolo Corpodicristo (Sartorialist) – and we were hoping for a rescue intervention, but as usual the municipal administration intervened when it was too late, to decree his death» .
On Tuesday morning, while Aniello was writing the letter to the ministry, in Piazza dell’Olmo there were six cars parked wildly between the four white umbrellas with red writing and the black tensile structure. There was that situation of degradation that residents and traders can’t wait to remove. «We have presented a project to redevelop the green spaces to the Municipality which we hope will be accepted». Danila Pace (Lautieri beauty salon) is willing to cover the expense and the owners of the premises located in the square are ready to think of “the whole of the tents”.
Mascia Aniello confirms everything: «The project to sponsor the flowerbed around the two elm trees has been practically accepted and even if one of the two trees is cut down, it can be put to the ground». «Our project – explains Danila Pace – includes three flowerbeds with shade bushes (azaleas, hydrangeas, pieris, hosta, bergenia), a mulch sheet covered with volcanic lapillus and an irrigation system that can be controlled remotely».
The LED lights on the pavement were put back on a couple of months ago at the same time as the new lights for the flowerbed. So soon Piazza dell’Olmo will change its “wings”. «The roof designed by Patolocco which is still standing will be removed – anticipates councilor Aniello – and new dehors will be added in its place».
