PFAS have poisoned the Veneto and increased mortality

There is a correlation between exposure to Pfas and mortality from cancer and cardiovascular diseases in the period between 1985 and 2018. After years of complaints and analysis, the result is clear.

They had been there the investigationsAnd of Reports of October 2016 and September 2017, the Ispra study of June 2017 on the concentration of pollutants in the Lake Maggiore region and the results of theinvestigation commissioned by the CNRThen, finally, in 2018 the Council of Ministers I had finally declared a state of emergency for PFAS in Veneto and appointed a commissioner.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or perfluoroacrylic acidsare a family of chemical compounds used mainly by industry.

Years and years of complaints they led to how much found by the research group of the University of Padua coordinated by the professor Annibale Biggeri of the Department of Cardio-thoracic-vascular Sciences and Public Health of the University of Padua, in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Tumor Registry, the Statistical Service of the Higher Institute of Health and with the citizen science contribution of the Mamme No group Pfas.

The study called ‘All-cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality in the population of a large Italian area contaminated by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (1980–2018)‘ was published in ‘Enviromental Health’.

For the first time – we read in a note -, the data provided formally demonstrate an association between exposure to Pfas and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, also highlighting the correlation between kidney cancer and testicular cancer and Pfas in the Veneto population of ‘contaminated area’.

In the 34 years between 1985, assumed as the start date of water contamination, and 2018, the last year of availability of mortality data – explained Professor Annibale Biggeri – in the resident population of the Red area we observed 51,621 deaths against 47,731 expected. This is – he underlined – an excess of 3,890 deaths compared to expected, i.e. one more death every three days. We found evidence of increased mortality from cardiovascular diseases, particularly heart disease and ischemic heart disease, and malignant neoplastic diseases, including kidney cancer and testicular cancer. And the trend is growing especially among younger people, where we have found an increase in cancer mortality. Also noteworthy is the fact that a protective effect is found in women of childbearing age, probably due to the transfer of Pfas to their offspring.”
