Traps for wild boars: after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the Municipality and the Local Health Authority of Teramo for the management of ungulates, the locations of their placement are top secret. The operational activities to be implemented for the placement of the capture manholes and the recovery of the animals are not yet ready and the Municipality is tight-lipped about the timing and installation of the capture cages. We think about the end of the month, but there are no certainties yet. «After the controversies with animal rights groups there is a serious possibility that the operations could be boycotted», says councilor Pina Ciammariconi even if all the technical activity is entrusted to the ecological policeman Vincenzo Calvarese.

THE CLEANING

But the ASL says that the protocol is far from starting. «As far as we know, the problem seems to be contained at the moment – explains the director of the animal health service of the ASL, Enzino De Febis – Furthermore, on our advice, the Municipality of Teramo has taken steps to remove the causes that led to the ungulates to approach urbanized areas and in any case to descend into the valley, thanks to better cleaning of the places, eliminating waste”. Therefore, according to director De Febis, if there is no need, the containment activity through the use of cages will not start. «It’s certainly not our entertainment. The Municipality is also following the walls of Ispra to control sick animals that cannot be returned to the territory”. If and when the protocol is active, each entity will have its own task. «As ASL we limit ourselves to assigning the code identified for each cage – added De Febis – and we will take care of the certification of movements, because each cage will have its geographical coordinates. The Municipality will have to think about the positioning by choosing the places where to place the traps provided by the Park Authority. Obviously we will carry out an inspection to certify the healthiness of the animal after capture. The role of the veterinary service will affect the entire part relating to animal welfare in the various phases.”

THE ALARM

Among the hilly areas of Teramo where the invasion of wild boars persists there is certainly the Colleparco district. «The situation is tragic – says the president of the neighborhood committee, Piero Di Silvestre – there are still around twenty examples in circulation. We also spoke to the prefect. It is very dangerous to live in this neighborhood, wild boars roam during the day even in the children’s playground. They also go rummaging through garbage cans. I hope that this protocol starts as soon as possible, but I doubt it because I see the administration absent. Animal rights activists? There’s no way you can open tables with them. Should we perhaps wait for someone to die? My son even ended up off the road to avoid falling into the wild boars.” In Colleparco the problem began about two years ago. «But it is far from being solved – Di Silvestre said – I personally saw 12 specimens crossing the road two days ago. We residents are exhausted and angry.”
