From today to Friday 10 May the city of Modena will host 300 experts from all over the world in ear and lateral skull base surgery. This is thanks to the International Workshop on Ear Surgery, which will be hosted by the Service Center of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of UNIMORE (via del Pozzo 71, Modena) under the direction of Professor Daniele Marchioni, director of the Otolaryngology Unit of the Hospital. University of Modena, and Professor Livio Presutti, former director of the Otolaryngology and Audiology Unit of Sant’Orsola Malpighi in Bologna.
The choice of Modena for this event of international importance is not random: in fact, the minimally invasive endoscopic surgery procedures on the middle and inner ear were codified here, which have found international diffusion and consensus and are currently used throughout the world. In particular, Modena stood out for the execution of the first endoscopic and trans-canal approaches for the treatment of acoustic nerve neuroma, a tumor that develops between the inner ear and the brainstem region. These surgeries use the external auditory canal as a natural corridor to remove and treat ear pathologies, reducing the bone demolition characteristic of traditional surgeries.
The conference will take place over several days with a live surgery demonstration performed by Professor Daniele Marchioni and his team. There are sessions dedicated to expert surgeons in these sectors, sessions dedicated to young surgeons, application of new microscopic, endoscopic and exoscopic technologies (new frontier that allows working in a 3D environment); also discussion sessions on complex and lateral skull base cases.
