“Monte Corno” conquers the Trento Film Festival

The film about the historic ascent of the Gran Sasso receives public approval

The Trento Film Festival, a prestigious event in the cinematographic panorama dedicated to the mountains, recently crowned the film “Monte Corno – It seemed like I was in the air” as winner of the Audience Award for Best Mountaineering Film¹.

The film, directed by the L’Aquila director Luca Cococcetta, narrates the first ascent of the Gran Sasso which took place in 1573 by Francesco De Marchi.

The story takes place on 19 August 1573, when De Marchi, together with a small expedition, reaches the summit of Corno Grande, considered at the time the highest mountain in Italy.

The climb, described as an epic undertaking for those times, has been recalled through a detailed reconstruction and evocative images of the climb up the limestone rock of Corno Grande².

The film managed to capture the attention and favor of the public, who had the opportunity to attend the preview screening during the festival.

The narrative, faithful to the words of Francesco De Marchi, is intertwined with elements of period fiction and documentary, creating a dialogue between past and present and offering an in-depth look at an archaic era of mountaineering¹.

The screenplay, edited by Marco Zaccarelli, and the performance of the actor Massimo Poggio, a well-known mountaineering enthusiast, contributed to making the story authentic and engaging.

The film also benefited from the interventions of experts such as the historians Stefano Ardito and Roberto Mantovani, the mountaineer Hervé Barmasse and the geologist Mario Tozzi, who enriched the narrative with their contributions on the measurement of the summit, the Calderone Glacier and historical trade between L’Aquila and Teramo².

The recognition obtained at the Trento Film Festival represents an important milestone for director Luca Cococcetta and for Italian cinema dedicated to mountaineering.

The film “Monte Corno – It seemed that I was in the air” stands out for its ability to convey the passion for the mountains and mountaineering, at the same time celebrating an important historical figure such as that of Francesco De Marchi, who with his undertaking left an indelible mark in the history of Italian mountain exploration.
