Matera opposes the biomethane project in La Martella

Decision conference on May 15th, the Municipality reiterates its contrary opinion

In view of the decision-making services conference, the municipal administration of Matera confirms its opposition to the project of a biomethane plant proposed by an Apulian company in the La Martella area, near the former municipal landfill.

In a press release issued by the Municipality of Matera, the municipal administration, led by the mayor Domenico Bennardi and the councilor for the environment Massimiliano Amenta, reiterated its opinion against the construction of a biomethane production plant from organic waste in La Hammer. The decision-making services conference is scheduled for May 15, 2024 in the Basilicata Region, in Potenza.

The project, advanced by a limited company from Puglia, involves the construction of the plant on private land adjacent to the former municipal landfill, now abandoned and almost completely reclaimed. “The Municipality of Matera, among the hypotheses for relaunching the former waste platform of La Martella, had considered the possibility of building a public plant for the production of biomethane from organic fraction, without however formally proceeding”, explained Bennardi.

The mayor then highlighted the strong opposition expressed by the local community and the city council, the highest expression of civic will, which expressed itself with an agenda approved unanimously. The municipal administration has therefore asked the competent offices of the Region to slow down the examination of the project to consider possible alternatives far from that area, also given the concern of residents and owners of production activities in the agri-food sector, worried about the past consequences linked in the presence of the landfill.

“Our commitment is to respect the will of the citizens of La Martella, opposing the construction of industrial plants in that area,” concluded Bennardi, launching an appeal to the newly elected Matera regional councilors to support the community’s reasons.
