«Let’s reopen Porta Cremona and take back history»

PIZZIGHETTONE – After 104 years the ancient Porta Cremona Nuova could once again become a real gateway. President Sergio Barili, a few weeks ago on the occasion of the general assembly, he anticipated that one of the embryonic ideas of the Mura volunteers group was precisely this, but he reserved some evaluations. Now we have moved from words to deeds: the day before last the group’s board of directors has in fact approved important investments aimed at recovering the ancient Austrian wallsto be submitted to the prior approval of the Superintendence.

Among these also the ‘breccia’. Not only that: after the green light, the first meeting with the associated architects studio was held yesterday Giambattista Frigoli, Giuseppe Annuiti And Maria Giulia of Maleo, for the assignment of the preliminary design task.

To understand the importance of the initiative we need to take a step back to 1920, when following the demolition of two casemates necessary for the opening of the provincial road, Porta Cremona was walled up. The objective of the GVM is precisely to reopen it to regain a historical element of the village, adding the installation of a bridge that connects to the moat. The preliminary project will define the qualitative and functional characteristics of the works, the framework of the needs to be satisfied and the historical specifications to be integrated with any requirements of the Superintendence. And if everything goes well, the tender could be awarded in the first months of 2025. The GVM specifies that this important redevelopment is in continuity with all the other redevelopment interventions of the ancient Austrian walls, which over the years have significantly improved the appearance of the village and at the same time its tourist attractiveness and usability by citizens and merchants.

The GVM board of directors also approved other interventions on the walls and in general on the historic center, which, considering also the opening of Porta Cremona Nuova, would overall exceed one hundred thousand euros of investment. We will start with the most urgent one: the waterproofing of some areas of the museum roof on Piazza d’Armi, to avoid problems resulting from rising damp and condensation, which are the consequence of water infiltration from the roof.

Then the renovation of the external facade of the current headquarters of the association and the lighting of the Silva garden to make it usable for cultural activities. All this, as well as the other fundamental investments completed in the past, is possible thanks to the great work and commitment of over two hundred volunteers. Who work hard every year first and foremost for the success of the ‘Fasulìn de l’öc cun le cùdeghe’ event, which with its over eighteen thousand average attendances represents the GVM’s main source of self-financing. The next one will be the 32nd edition – October 31st; 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10 November – and will therefore be fundamental for carrying forward the ambitious projects in the pipeline.
