Sarap requests the prefect’s intervention

TERNI – The last violent episode occurred three days ago, when a penitentiary policeman was brutally attacked by an inmate.

The situation in Sabbione penitentiarydefined as “a time bomb” is at the center of the position taken by the Sarap that on the topic asks for a meeting with the prefect of Terni.

«The request – we read in the note signed by deputy general secretary, Roberto Esposito – is motivated by a series of critical issues found within the penitentiary system. There is severe overcrowding, with an inmate population far exceeding the facility’s capacity. There are frequent episodes of violence within the prison and frequent phenomena of abuse among inmates. The presence of penitentiary police personnel – thunders Esposito – is not adequate to guarantee the safety and health of prisoners andto prevent and counter critical events such as escapes and protests.”

The union believes that urgent intervention by the prefect is necessary to address serious problems that put the stability and effectiveness of the Terni penitentiary system at risk.

«It is hoped that the request will be taken into consideration and that concrete measures will be adopted with the opening of a discussion table comparison to deal with reported emergencies. The situation – says Sarap – is no longer sustainable by those personnel who fight on the front line every day and who are at the end of their strength”.
