CATANIA – On May 1st, the Catania police arrested two minors for resisting a public official and aggravated assault. The two young people, on board a scooter, did not respect the policemen’s halt and fled: a chase began along Viale Kennedy, in the Playa area. At the same time, the officers informed their colleagues working at the other checkpoints.
At a further halt by the police, the driver of the fleeing scooter, instead of stopping, hit an officer, causing him to fall to the ground, thus causing injuries. The chase continued through the streets of the city until the police helicopter managed to identify the fleeing vehicle using a sophisticated on-board camera, documenting all the phases of the escape, so as to provide precise information to all the crews who at the same time they arrived to block the young people.
Once they reached Via Ammiraglio Caracciolo, the two young people were forced to stop. From the investigations carried out, the scooter was not found to be the subject of theft, but it did not have insurance coverage or periodic inspection, which is why the two minors had fled. The driver was found to have no driving license as he had never obtained it. For these reasons, fines of around 6,000 euros were imposed. The policeman who was overwhelmed during the escape was immediately rescued by 118: he is out of danger, so after a period of rest he will be able to resume operational duty.
