Palermo, the cultural heritage protection unit recovers 3,583 archaeological assets

The Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Palermo present the final balance of the operational activity for 2023. 3583 archaeological assets have been recovered, 80 finds of historical interest, 41 people reported, over 450 preventive checks. The intervention strategy of the Unit was structured along two fundamental lines: prevention activity, represented by multiple inspection activities, and enforcement action, developed through judicial police investigations.
During 2023, the prevention activity certified the execution of 471 checks aimed at the safety of places of culture, such as museums, archives, libraries and archaeological areas or areas protected by landscape restrictions.
Equally incisive was the counteraction developed through judicial police investigations, aimed at recovering stolen cultural assets and identifying criminal associations operating in the sector.
In 2023, 41 people were released into custody for various crimes (mainly theft, receiving stolen goods, counterfeiting works of art and for crimes against the landscape) and illicitly stolen cultural assets worth over 1,500 million euros were seized. with the execution of 36 searches. The recovered goods were returned to museums, churches and local authorities responsible for the area, with the aim of guaranteeing their public use.
