On May 6, 1976 a earthquake of magnitude 6.4 which lasted one minute devastated more than 100 municipalities in Friuli killing 990 people, injuring 3 thousand And destroying houses, churches, monuments. The disastrous earthquake, defined in Friulian the Orcolat – monstrous being that local popular tradition indicates as the cause of earthquakes – was felt in almost all of central-northern Italy and was followed by numerous repliessome of them very strong and the same devastating. Today marks the 48th anniversary it’s a commemoration organized by the Julia Alpine Brigade, took place on May 4th in the Goi-Pantanali barracks Gemona – where the 1976 earthquake caused the collapse of a building and the death of 29 conscripts.
One will be celebrated in the Cathedral of Gemona del Friuli mass in memory of all victims. The commemoration will be an opportunity to remember the solidarity demonstrated nationally and internationally in providing the first rescued to the earthquake-stricken areas and to bring attention to rebirthin just over 15 years, of the affected areas thanks to an approach to reconstruction that has been called “Friuli model”. A path based on the choral and compact mobilization of the Friulian people, led by i mayorsthe community ecclesial and forces entrepreneurialunder the coordination of Extraordinary Commissioner Giuseppe Zamberlettiwhich was named six years after the earthquake Minister for the Coordination of Civil Protectiona resource that emerged and was structured for the first time in Italy precisely after the 1976 earthquake.
The president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedrigain a post on Facebook recalled the anniversary: ”Forty-eight years ago, the heart of Friuli was shaken from an earthquake that left a indelible mark in the lives of many people. Today, we remember with respect and solidarity those who lived through that tragic moment and the heroes who were involved in the rescue. The strength of the Friulian community has demonstrated that even in the most difficult situations, unity and resilience they can overcome any adversity.”
“It was a fundamental moment in the history of assistance to populations affected by catastrophic events”, recalled the extraordinary commissioner for the 2016 earthquake, Guido Castelli. A post-earthquake phase in Friuli that “laid the foundations for the birth of National Civil Protection Service in 1981. For the first time, the ordinary bodies (minister of the Interior, prefect, government commissioner in the Region, mayor) and extraordinary bodies of the Civil Protection (extraordinary commissioner) were identified”.
