We receive and publish a press release from the UILA-BASILICATA Regional Secretary, Gerardo Nardiello:

“This year too female and forestry workers and SAAAPwill clean the woods, act as fire sentries, make the roads in the Lucanian area passable and intervene in our increasingly short-staffed municipalities.

As Secretary of Uila Basilicata and on behalf of the entire organization I extend my most sincere best wishes to approximately 3500 people who will be employed on construction sites in the coming months throughout Basilicata, overworked due to a lack of turnover requested for years: over time, retirements weigh more and more on work planning and, if steps are not taken to replenish the workforce with other workers, it will be increasingly difficult to organize construction sites in all the territories of the region.

It is not a concern of the unions or a simple way to widen the scope of the Region’s spending, but every year the need to change paradigm with respect to the logic of making a living, which systematically looms before the opening of construction sites.

Also missing is a real reorganization of the white-collar sectorone is missingequalization of working days, there is a lack of highly qualified professional figures able to read climate changes and understand which areas are subject to hydrogeological instability and which are the territories on which to pay greater attention.

But to think about a forestry organized in an articulated way, to imagine coordinated and resolute interventions, to understand the morphological complexity of our Basilicata, we must finally take a step forward and find a solution that has solid foundations and a long-term horizon.

We have been reiterating that for some time it would be right to grant the 151 working days to everyone, without any distinction, without any hesitation.

But if we don’t focus on forestation as a profitable investment for our communities, if our forests don’t become tourism attractors, if we don’t think about the real potential of Basilicata, we will always chase the emergency and waste money.

During the election campaign, forestation was at the center of the programs of the various coalitions: let’s follow the words with actions.

The next Councilor for Agriculture and the next Council have taken on a great commitment: to revitalize a sector that survives day by day and, only thanks to the sacrifice of workers, pulls the cart.

We hope for a fruitful and programmatic discussion on the topic, we hope that this will be the five-year period in which forestation will finally be the protagonist of the Region’s development policies and will not be treated as an annoying frill.

Uila Basilicata is ready for discussion and is ready to present its ideas, with the awareness of those who have their ear to the ground and their gaze turned towards the future”.
