THE review judges they file the first orders: they are those with which the appeals presented by doctors suspended from healthcare positions at the hospital are rejectedthe hospital of San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona because in the medical team of head physician Enrico Coscioni when he operated Umberto Maddolo, a patient who later died and in whose artery a gauze was found. However, the issue linked to Coscioni’s position within the coalition has not yet been resolved‘Agenas which resulted in the removal by the Government which considered the accusations made against the former head physician, health consultant of the governor Vincenzo De Luca, “very serious”. This appeal was instead presented by Salerno prosecutor’s office, led by the chief prosecutor Giuseppe Borrelli and the vicar Luigi Alberto Cannavale. The banned doctors, let’s remember, are the anesthesiologist Pietro Toigo (defended by the lawyer Giovanni Sofia), the cardiac surgeons Gerardo Del Negro and Francesco Pirozzi and the vascular surgeon Aniello Puca which remain suspended for nine and six months respectively from investigating judge Piero Indinnimeo. Coscioni, defended by lawyers Agostino De Caro and Gaetano Pastorand, he had the longest ban: twelve months.
THE INVESTIGATION
The investigation file was opened after the death of the elderly man operated on by the heart surgeon and his team who, according to the prosecution, did not adopt the procedures required for the operation and also forgot a piece of gauze in the patient’s heart which, according to what the investigating judge found would have been a contributory cause of Umberto Maddolo’s death. The judge for preliminary investigations had already issued an order rejecting the revocation of the interdictory measure for each doctor after the guarantee interrogation. On that occasion they all spoke, explaining their position, describing the procedures adopted but, according to the investigating judge, strong inconsistencies emerged from their reports. Interesting testimonies from some of the doctors under investigation were therefore also brought before the judges of the Review which would confirm some profiles of responsibility.
We remember that there are four profiles of responsibility recognized by the investigating judge against Coscioni and his team. First of all, the methods of preparing the surgery to which Maddolo (died on 20 December 2021) is subjected; therefore the choices relating to the execution of the intervention; the methods of execution of the same, also with reference to having left a piece of gauze in the patient’s heart; finally the management of the critical event that then caused the death. we are now awaiting the order with which the Review judges decide whether or not to accept the prosecutor’s request to suspend Coscioni also from the Agenas position.
