Barletta NEWS24 | In Barletta a protocol for the restoration and renaturalization of the dune cordons

The Legambiente Associations Barletta Club
and Italian Society of
Environmental Geology (SIGEA-APS), in order to promote correct
management of the beaches and dune belts characterizing the seafront
Mennea of Barletta, were the promoters of an important proposal
at the municipal administration such as: “Restoration and
Renaturalization of the Dunari Cordons along the Western Coast Road”
(prot. n. 577 of 04/01/2024). Document approved by resolution of
Municipal Council n.112 of 04/23/2024 which was followed by the signing of the
memorandum of understanding between Legambiente, SIGEA-APS and the Administration
municipal, on May 2nd, with prot. 34396.

This project plans to dedicate a portion of at least 30%
of the width of the emerged beach of the Mennea seafront (starting after
the Massawa lido) to the restoration and renaturalization of the “Cordoni Dunari”
promoting, in agreement with Bar.SASpA, collection interventions
waste and the initiation of forms of sustainable management that favor waste management
dune formation. These formations are real habitats
natural resources of considerable importance for the protection of flora and fauna
present along the coast.

A process that can be admired along sought-after natural beaches
touristically as in Salento, on the northern Gargano or in
Sardinia, just to name a few.

In this regard, the document provides for:

– promote management procedures for biomass stranded in
compliance with the Guidelines of the Puglia Region;

– provide elements of knowledge for the operators responsible for
beach cleaning operations and for users of the coast in
general (bathers, horticulturists, beach club managers, students, etc.),
so that they gain awareness of the real impact that the resources have
natural resources and the coastal environment suffer due to intense use
summer, mechanized beach cleaning operations (plowing
deep);

– promote protection, recovery, restoration and valorisation activities
of the areas of naturalistic value present along the coast, with
particular attention to the beaches.

Certainly the restoration of the dunes would constitute an effective system
natural means of combating the effects of climate change on
local sandy coasts, an opinion also shared by the community
science that is working to identify forms of mitigation
to the effects of climate change.

Furthermore, the restoration of dune ecosystems favors a
implementation in the extension of public green areas, as it stands
already taking place in a small experimental area always along the same one
coast.

All this was possible thanks to the synergistic commitment he has
having seen the municipal administration, in the person of Mayor Cosimo
Cannito and the Councilor for the Environment Giuseppe D’Alba, the UTC of the Sector
Environment and the two Associations, work on this project with commitment
to help contain coastal wind erosion and beyond.

Furthermore, awareness-raising activities by the Associations
provided for in the memorandum of understanding, have already begun on the stretch some time ago
of the coast in question, welcoming numerous school groups who have
was able to appreciate the beach ecosystem and the nests of the
Fratino (Charadrius Alexandrinus), protected with care and attention by
volunteers. A small wader, the Fratino, which is proving to be a
great ally for identifying the foot of the “potential” dune
which will be reconstituted, which will represent a natural work for
counteract the dispersion of our greatest resource
coasts: sand.

Last but not least, it should be remembered that the presence of this
small bird and its nesting close to natural areas
on our beaches, is an indication of the well-being of the ecosystem and of a
correct management of the natural areas of the beach.

The protocol signed together with the renewed regulations for the
beach cleaning will be presented and shared with the authorities
authorities of the Port Authority in the next few days.
