MASSA – «Arguing that the Frigido River is a biologically dead river is incorrect and discrediting our city and all citizens». These are the words of the Massa municipal councilor of the Lega group Paolo Balloni, following the infamous episode of Report on mining activity which aired last April 21st.

«In the Report of 21 April, there is a passage relating to the impacts that mining activity has, in particular on rivers, from which it seems to emerge that Flaviano Bianchini, director of Source International, refers to the Frigido River, defining it as “a biologically dead river.” In the comparison between the environmentalist world and extractive activities, I believe that subjects and sectors that have nothing to do with it and that could be damaged by it should not be involved. The rivers – continues Balloni – play a vital function for environmental balance and the doubt instilled by the report that the city’s main waterway is biologically dead not only discredits the image of the city itself, but could have repercussions
negative on the entire tourist and seaside sector. During my mandate as Environment Councilor I was able to visit the river bed dozens of times, I had interesting experiences linked to the world of sport in the river and the municipal administration, in concert with many local associations, planned and implemented actions of repopulating the river, monitoring fish species, cleaning the riverbed from anthropogenic waste and other activities to raise awareness of environmental issues”.

«These actions are, in part, contained within the Fiume Contract, signed at Filanda di Forno on 28 May 2022 by the Municipality of Massa (leader), Regional Park of the Apuan Alps, Consortium of Reclamation 1 Tuscany North with companies and associations of the territory, for a total of 20 subjects who have proposed, planned and implemented actions to enhance the river, which cannot be penalized by such a discrediting statement, spread at a national level in the service. The commitment made by the Municipality has also focused on the inclusion in the Implementation Plans of the Extraction Basins (Pabe) partly in the approval phase, of greater obligations for the extractive companies, in relation to the environmental certifications of the production processes, but also in relation to certifications relating to safety in the workplace. The service, while not adding anything with respect to the well-known environmental critical issues for which various institutions have already been active for some time, has thus spread an imprecise message, which I believe needs to be clarified”.
