Smart Mobility, the challenge of Confindustria’s Campania Digital Innovation Hub for the 15-minute city

“Smart Mobility. Connectivity, Digitalisation, European Records”, a constructive opportunity for in-depth analysis and analysis of the event, organized by the Campania Dih – Confindustria Network, in the cycle of dissemination events of the EDIH PRIDE scientific magazine Regional Polo for Digital Innovation “Inforsfera”, at the Industrial Union of Naples.

There was talk of “intelligent mobility” as the keystone for the sustainable development of cities and urban areas and in this context the role of the Campania Dih emerged as an aggregator on digital sustainability projects.

“Edih Pride – underlined the CEO of Campania Dih and coordinator of the Hub, Edoardo Imperiale – has the task of accompanying and supporting SMEs and public service managers towards the digital transaction with the use, in particular, of the three technologies, artificial intelligence, high performance computing, cybersecurity. With the transport sector and in the governance of communities, there can be many initiatives to be structured in order to improve the services offered”.

During the speech, Imperiale provided concrete examples. With AI, in the context of Pride activities, it is possible to imagine an analysis of mobility and territory, exploiting the integration of sensors, drones and advanced cameras and algorithms based on Neural Networks to recognize subjects, objects and situations to report any critical issues promptly, exploiting the potential of Edge Computing and 5G connectivity.

It is also possible to include services (those offered to citizens) to test models and algorithms for the analysis of datasets, images and video streams, collected from heterogeneous sources, such as software applications, field cameras, IoT sensors, in areas urban and industrial (e.g. predictive maintenance, optimal resource management, chatbot, defect inspection).

“Data analysis – explained Imperiale – is the basis for building new projects, for testing innovations”. The opening of the works with Giorgio Volpe, Deputy Director of the Naples Industrial Union. “By optimizing connectivity and digitalisation, – he explained – revolutionizes the way we move, from rationalizing traffic flows to reducing environmental impact. The result is the improvement of the quality of life of citizens and the viability of the businesses themselves”

Maurizio Manfellotto, President of Campania DIH and President of Hitachi Rail, launched the challenge regarding the things to do. “We need to imagine – he said – the city of the future, that of the next thirty years. In this context, the contribution of businesses and structures such as the Dih can be decisive.”

“In the coming years – he explained – starting from the analysis of data and with the digital knowledge in our possession we must focus not necessarily on the construction of new material infrastructures but on the organization of services, systems and means. By intervening on the network we have it is already possible to triple the offer”.

For Manfellotto the objective to be achieved will be that of “the city of 15 minutes, it is the time it takes to reach work, a point of entertainment, a school, a health center”.

Ulderigo Zona, Executive Officer Hitachi Rail, talked about the good results in the field and the projects to be launched. The protagonists of the sector spoke during the meeting.

“The Consortium and its member companies – declared Gaetano Ratto, President of Unico Campania – are proceeding with the digitalisation of ticketing and infomobility services. The success of the solutions introduced is demonstrated by the ever-increasing use by Users of digital titles in APPs, electronic subscriptions and the Tap&go system. Further services are being activated for the definitive abandonment of magnetic tickets in the coming months. Digital solutions also guarantee companies a wealth of data for the continuous improvement of the service offered.”

Anm general director Francesco Favo is on the same wavelength and on the need to focus on institutional collaboration. “Sustainability – he underlined – is made up of three elements: economy, environment and society. As ANM we take care of the economic side; a new input on other topics must come in synergy with the institutions. Certainly we need to create the infrastructures but today we need to talk about the services that will have to operate on these infrastructures making them useful”.

For Umberto De Gregorio, DG EAV, “it will be necessary to address these logics by implementing vision and planning, avoiding many mistakes of the past. We need to imagine and build with clear and sustainable programs.” Luca Cascone, president of the IV Council Commission for Urban Planning, Transport and Public Works of Campania, recalled the activities implemented by the Region. “The Campania Region has been engaged, for years, in an action to relaunch the transport system with investments in infrastructure and vehicles. We are betting big on innovation and digital, with concrete facts. In particular, the Region believes in the idea of Smart Mobility and connectivity, we have invested 130 million in EAV alone. Significant investments also for the creation of 400 km of fiber which will be available to the territory for the services that we wish to implement”.
