Unrest in Livorno due to the arrival this evening of the leader of the League Matteo Salvini to present his book at the 4 Mori theatre. Around 300 anti-fascist Livorno protesters attempted to surround the building but were kept at a safe distance by a cordon of police and carabinieri. “Salvini be careful, the wind still whistles in Livorno”, warned a banner displayed by Azione Livorno Antifascista. During the confrontation with the police, firecrackers, smoke bombs, eggs, oranges and even some glass bottles and finally even a paper bomb were thrown at the officers.

Lots of chaos outside, lots of calm inside the theatre, which was packed with over 500 seats. Salvini, who arrived slightly late, told reporters: “Livorno is an open, curious, supportive city. Those who throw eggs at the police and make threats are not Livorno like those today in Naples who attacked the police and contested Vannacci”. “I’m sorry that in 2024 there are the real fascists left. The red fascists are the last remaining fascists who would like to prevent someone from presenting a book, from speaking.” Already this morning the leader of the League had reiterated that he and the party would not be intimidated even after the episode of electoral posters being torn down in Rosignano.

“In the province of Livorno the usual democrats on alternate plates, tolerant only with those who think like them. If they think they are intimidating us they are very wrong: the League does not retreat an inch”, he posted. This evening he went to the initiative in the theater and presented his book ‘Controvento’.
