On May 1st, the nursing staff of the Piedmont Hospital and a medical director were subjected to a violent verbal attack accompanied by heavy threats from a user in the emergency room. The UILFPL expresses solidarity with the healthcare workers and asks the general management of the IRCCS Neurolesi, once again, to establish a permanent police post, as is already active at the Messina Polyclinic. Uil also writes to the Prefect of Messina for information.
“The undersigned trade union organization has become aware that, on the day of
Wednesday 1 May 2024, the Nursing, OSS and Medical Director staff who have
performed night duty at the Piedmont hospital and was subjected to, by a user of the
emergency room, a very serious verbal attack characterized by repeated threats
who, only thanks to the intervention of the police, called by the operators themselves,
physical aggression was avoided.
In fact, on the day in question, at approximately 10.00 pm, a citizen user, who is
addressed to the general emergency room following an illness, he inexplicably ranted
against healthcare workers and, in particular, against the nurse present at Triage,
who was repeatedly insulted, even by the user’s family, with violence
and unusual verbal vehemence only because she had simply communicated
that the doctor’s visit on duty would take place after a few minutes of waiting because
all the rooms, including the code red one, were busy with patients in progress
investigations.
Unfortunately, we must report that these very serious episodes are no longer cases
isolated, but they represent a sad and unacceptable everyday life.
Just a few weeks ago, on the occasion of a further episode of violence, a
security officer on duty at the general emergency room in Piedmont, in the attempt
to quell an attack, was injured with a knife by a user.
What happened is absolutely intolerable and poses very serious problems
the physical safety of emergency room workers, who, among all the workers of
healthcare, appear to be the most exposed to aggression and physical violence.
Therefore, in light of the serious events that have occurred, Uil Fpl in addition to expressing feelings
of solidarity and closeness to the operators concerned, calls for the establishment of a permanent position
Police inside the general emergency room of the Piedmont hospital to ensure safety
protection of the workers of this Company and at the same time, invites the SV to take action in the offices
appropriate, towards the attacker, as required by current legislation.”
