A first case of Dengue was diagnosed in Basilicataat the hospital “San Carlo” of Potenza.

One to be infected by the virus 45 year old woman of Brazilian origins, who, following the symptoms experienced, turned to the care of the Potenza Regional Hospital. Here it was ascertained that the patient, in fact, was suffering from Dengue.

It is essentially a virulent disease transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes which, in turn, bite an infected person. There is therefore no direct contagion between humans, even if humans are the main host of the virus which circulates in the blood of the infected person for 2-7 days and it is precisely in this period of time that the mosquito can pick it up and transmit it to others .

THE most frequent symptoms are feveralso accompanied by acute headachespain around and behind the eyes, severe muscle and joint pain, nausea and vomit and skin irritations that may appear over most of the body 3 to 4 days after the onset of fever. Typical symptoms are often absent in children.

The most effective preventive measure against Dengue is to avoid coming into contact with the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

In this specific case, the patient admitted to the “San Carlo” was placed in the Infectious Diseases department to receive the necessary care and remain isolated; Fortunately, her health conditions are good and she has not had any serious symptoms worthy of particular concern. It is therefore underlined that infected people cannot directly infect, as happened for example with Covid infection.

The case was reported toHigher Institute of Health to be able to certify it. In Italy there are not many cases of Dengue, currently there are around a hundred, unlike Brazil where there is a real epidemic with over 4 million cases.
