Descriptive text here

In a new and moving representation that comes directly from the Milanese scenes, the Teatro Trastevere in Rome will host the show “I am Nijinsky” on 11 and 12 May 2024, a scenic work freely taken from the diaries of the famous Russian Ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky. Daniele Bernardi, known for his talent in acting and directing, takes the stage, bringing to life the pages written during a period of profound personal crisis of Nijinsky.

An emotional journey into Nijinsky’s life

The performance is based on the turbulent years Nijinsky spent in Saint-Moritz during the winter of 1918-1919, a period marked by war and personal tragedies, including the death of his brother, which contributed to his mental decline. Spectators will be transported to that historical period, experiencing the evolution of Nijinsky’s internal torment through Ledwina Costantini’s scenography and sound textures. Luisa Beeli’s costumes and Raissa Avilés’ voice-over further enrich the narrative, creating an intensely evocative and immersive atmosphere.

The production not only stages the events described in the diaries but also explores the complexity of human relationships and the burden of isolation and loss through the figure of Romola, Nijinsky’s wife, who helplessly watches her husband’s mind deteriorate. This theatrical interpretation takes the form of a continuous dialogue between past and present, showing how personal events can resonate across decades.

Artistic contributions and collaborations

“I am Nijinsky” is the result of a significant artistic collaboration, which includes the support of institutions and foundations such as Pro Helvetia and the Municipality of Riviera, thus ensuring a high-level production. The stage photographs by Alessandro Ligato and the video editing by Bianca Luce Koehler document and amplify the visual scope of the show.
