Fentanyl, what is the substance with which they cut heroin in Perugia: the investigation begins

The Perugia prosecutor’s office has opened a case against unknown persons in relation to the presence of Fentanyl found as a cutting substance in a dose of heroin recovered a few weeks ago in the Perugia area. Drug dealing – according to what ANSA has learned – is the crime hypothesis that appears in the file, with which the Office led by Raffaele Cantone aims to carry out specific investigations. “I am worried about what is emerging and I want to try to understand if it is a sporadic event or if there are similar episodes,” the magistrate had said in recent days immediately after the alarm was raised.

Fentanyl in the heroin dose was discovered in a random check carried out in recent weeks by the street unit of the Umbrian capital, managed by the Borgorete social cooperative. The quantity of the powerful analgesic found in the dose was minimal: heroin was 50%, then there was also codeine (30%) and diazepam (15%) as well as 5% Fentanyl. The national rapid alert system coordinated by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies has therefore been activated and a note has been sent from the Ministry of Health to the health departments of all the Regions to urge the structures dealing with addictions to «inform the people who do use of substances poses very serious health risks”. The new national prevention plan against the improper use of Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids was therefore set in motion which also provides for the sending of an alert to all the police forces and all the competent administrations so that the network of territorial monitoring and increased attention in all potentially exposed sectors.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80 times more potent than morphine. It is used as an analgesic and as an anesthetic.
Like morphine, it is a drug used, under very strict medical supervision, to treat severe pain, especially in surgery, traumatology and oncology. Sometimes, always on medical prescription, it is also used to treat patients with chronic painful pathologies, if resistant to other opioids. In fact, just 3 milligrams of the substance are enough to kill a person.

It causes sedation, drowsiness, mental confusion, miosis, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, and dangerous symptoms such as respiratory depression, unconsciousness, coma, and death.

Fentanyl is also known as the “zombie drug”. Its spread has caused a real emergency in the United States.
