Calabria celebrates World Bird Migration Day

Cosenza – The local conservation group 121 Sila of the Italian Lipu Bird Protection League (Glc Lipu Sila), coordinated by Gianluca Congi, is preparing to celebrate World Bird Migration Day for the third consecutive year. The event, called “The migration of birds in the MaB Sila biosphere reserve”, will be held on 11 May in the Special Protection Area (SPA) “Marchesato and Neto river” , one of the most significant sites of the Natura 2000 Network in Calabria, within the MaB Sila UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This day aims to raise public awareness of the importance of bird migration and the delicate ecological balance that supports this phenomenon. Particular attention will be given to reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers and encouraging the adoption of organic farming practices, essential for the conservation of natural habitats. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to observe the spring migration of numerous birds of prey and other beautiful birds. Various observation points will be set up within the vast area of the MaB Sila and the Marchesato SPA and the Neto river. Furthermore, the Glc Lipu Sila will engage in awareness and dissemination activities, including the dissemination of data collected in the field, with a particular focus on the protection of insects, the central theme of the 2024 edition of the world day.

“The event – as a note from the promoters explains – represents an important opportunity for learning and active participation for the local community and for all nature and environmental conservation enthusiasts. And it underlines the importance of conscious interventions for the protection of biodiversity and for supporting migratory birds, true indicators of the health of ecosystems”. (lmp)
