The mayor of Matera, Domenico Bennardi, expresses applause for the initiative and spirit of service of the local police officers Pietro Innella, Rosa D’Effremo and Giovanni Debernardiswhich in recent days they offered help and support to two elderly tourists, stuck at the Appulo Lucane railway station.

The episode was told by the protagonists themselves, with a certified email sent to the Town Hall.

The two elders they had stopped in the city for two days, and on Sunday 21 April they needed to reach Altamura.

Then they went to Fal station, learning that there were no trains because they had been replaced by buses.

The arrival of the vehicle was scheduled for 1pm next to the station, and in the meantime the two Italians had also been joined by an elderly Irish couple.

But at 1.30pm the four tourists were still waiting cold, then they stopped a local police patrol to ask for help.

After several phone calls, the police, as Maria Teresa Gè says in the email, were very kind and helpful and informed them that the bus stop had been moved to another place without specific notice, and they had to wait for the 4.15pm bus.

Then the patrol solved the problem by providing all the necessary support, which the two elderly tourists appreciated very much.

Comment on mayor:

«A fine example of hospitality, civic sense and duty, from the three agents whom I thank.

Unfortunately, the construction sites in full swing which involve a key area of the city cause some inconvenience, even if once completed there will be a positive return for the city and tourism.

In the future, all managers affected by changes in services and stops need to pay maximum attention to the communication aspect to avoid bad impressions and inefficiencies like this.

We work for the good and growth of the city, but we need everyone’s support to do it best.”
