MAY 1ST IN THE SQUARE OF PADUA, BETWEEN SECURITY AND PEACE

A call for peace, a strong appeal for safety at work, an opportunity for cohesion. May 1st in Padua was the opportunity to remind the thousands of people who arrived in Piazza dei Signori about the most central issues of the occupation. The mayor of Padua, as well as president of the Province, in front of the flags, banners and banners of the unions, accompanied by the notes of the May Day complex, wanted to underline the central role, today, of the workers’ struggles: for an adequate salary, but also gender inequality in the world of work, which in Italy still records a pay gap between men, who in Italy receive on average 31 euros per year compared to 28,500 for women. The secretaries of the main provincial unions, CGIL, CISL and UIL, spoke from the stage, meeting the city associations that had decided to march through the streets of the city in the morning. Of all the issues addressed, great importance was dedicated to safety at work: “We need to establish the crime of murder at work”, the Paduan trade unionists asked loudly in the aftermath of yet another tragedy, the death of a worker from Treviso 68 years old, hit by a crane and died on the morning of April 30, while working in Fiume Veneto.

“Without decent work for all, there is no democracy”, said the bishop of Padua, Monsignor Claudio Cipolla, from the stage. An important presence, that of the Diocese in the square because rarely has a bishop of the city attended the celebrations of Labor Day.
