The Carabinieri of Matera arrested this morning in Naples a 45-year-old local man already known to the police, suspected of having defrauded an elderly woman from Matera together with an accomplice on January 3rd. The loot from the scam was over 10 thousand euros.
Specifically, the lady had been contacted on the telephone by a man who, posing as a marshal, had told her that her son had caused a serious road accident by hitting a boy, and that to avoid arrest the mother had to hand over the sum of 11 thousand euros. Convinced not to put down the phone, the woman handed over money and gold jewelery to the fake courier who reached her home. Shortly thereafter, the old woman’s son, unaware of what had happened, returned home alerting the military of the scam.
The investigations, started by the Carabinieri and coordinated by the Matera prosecutor’s office, made it possible to identify the car used by the fraudsters. The man was taken to the Naples prison in the early hours of the morning while the woman was reported to the judicial authorities in a state of freedom.
