SYNOPSIS
Ferdinando Quagliuolo is the manager of a lottery box office. He always plays but never guesses a number, while his employee, Procopio Bertolini, always wins. He even wins a quadruplet that Ferdinand’s father gave him in a dream.
The lottery box office manager refuses to pay him the ticket and keeps the ticket because he considers the winnings to be his.
According to him, his father was the wrong person, since Bertolini lives in the very house where he lived when his father was still alive.
He also turns to the lawyer and the priest in an attempt to find support for his thesis, but in the end he is forced to give the ticket back to the employee. He then asks his father for help, turning to the picture hanging on the wall. And this help seems to be arriving: in fact, every time the employee Procopio tries to collect the winnings, misfortune happens to him. In the end Bertolini gives up and wants to give the ticket back to Ferdinando. Everything ends well: Procopio marries Ferdinando’s daughter who didn’t want to give her to him precisely because of the anger that her constant winnings caused him, and the quadruplet thus remains in the family.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Great passion, but above all great apprehension, accompanied us during the construction and staging of this text. Passion deriving from love and respect towards a great Theater such as Eduardo’s Theatre, apprehension because the technical transition from all this to representation hides an infinite number of pitfalls, we knew perfectly well that we were working on a material that was so he made even professional actors suffer.
Internalizing the concepts, the relationships between the various characters and between the characters and the stage space, were fixed points, the basic concepts on which the attention and study of the actors was focused. We were not interested in pure and simple naturalism, which was a much more demanding thing towards which we concentrated our work and that “VEROSIMILE” so dear to Eduardo.
The variant in our staging is the setting, everything has been moved outside, to that terrace, sunny and full of flowers, described by the author in the notes at the beginning of the text. It seemed to us that that airiness, that brightness, blended well with the tragicomic twist of the text.
