Porto, work stopped: summer is at risk – Teramo

GIULIANOVA. Stalemate at the port of Giulianova. On the eve of the summer season, in fact, both the works on the north and south pier are at a standstill. On the second at the end of January the intervention to strengthen the cliffs began, financed by the Region with 325,727 euros. For this reason, the last stretch of the pier was also closed to pedestrians to allow the works to take place. For about a month, however, everything has stopped and pedestrian and bicycle transit has also been restored. The work will serve to attenuate the refracting sea waves which, in the case of very rough seas, have also overcome the current south pier with their impact force. In the area affected by the works, once the intervention is completed, we will proceed with the installation of four new haulers, suggestive wooden structures equipped with nets used, years ago, for small-scale fishing.
Different story for the north pier: here the works, financed with three million euros by the Region, have been at a standstill for some time because the ministry has not yet given the OK for the passage of heavy vehicles on the pier, vehicles which should transport the boulders. Given the continuation of the stalemate, however, the regional councilor Umberto D’Annuntiis, who held the position of undersecretary under the previous council, is thinking of an alternative solution to restart the intervention, that is, working by sea and not by land. However, summer is now upon us and there is a serious risk that the north pier will remain closed again until September.
There are other projects for the completion of the port, namely the lengthening of the south pier and the elimination of the section of the north pier where the green lighthouse now stands. For these works, however, between 6 and 9 million euros are needed and the port authority is working to find these funds. Furthermore, a fortnight ago the artistic walk with Castelli’s ceramics on the south pier was named after the former regional councilor and former president of the port authority MVerticelli arch, exactly one year after his passing. On the plaque with the dedication it is written: «Dream on the sea, Marco Verticelli» because the work, inaugurated on 7 August 2019, was strongly supported by him.
