The competition, if you can call it that, isn’t scary though Geolier who, with his CV, knows how to defend himself discreetly: two studio albums under his belt, Emmanuel And The courage of children (both republished in two new editions), and a long list of collaborations with different artists (such as Guè, Lazza, there Dark Polo Gang, Gigi D’Alessio, Giorgia, Marracash, Ghali And Rose Villain), which have made him one of the number ones on the Italian music scene today.
“I really don’t give a damn about being number one – says the person directly involved – I wish there were ten number ones in Naples, that would rock. I want Neapolitan rap to tell the story of Naples, understand? I cannot do this alone. Let’s pretend that the rap game is a battle: at the moment, Naples is the city that, in my opinion, has the most powerful weapons, the ones that shoot the furthest, with the most precision. But then, we are a handful who can use them. If any other scene came against us, even with penknives, they would outnumber us so much that we would lose the battle and the war.”
A bond, the one with his Naples, which is decidedly very strong and intense and on which the rapper focuses a lot (to the point that, in the bio of his profile on the Spotify platform, he describes himself simply as “Neapolitan”): “We are finally going out, we are coming – he declared some time ago a GQ Italy – at the moment in Naples we are very strong, but we are poor in extras, in newcomers. Our mission is to create a future for the Neapolitan scene. You need a structure, a scaffolding behind it. Now there is the status, but you have to take the talents. It’s not easy, especially because the drive is lacking. Look at Milan: there are rappers, there are producers, there are graphic designers, there are videomakers. Here in Naples we have to create everything. In Milan there are pioneers. There will be thirty or forty big, giant rappers, you can count them. It’s like this in Rome too. In Naples there are those who make up the numbers, but then they are alone. Whoever does the numbers in Naples would like three or four more like him, because what do you do with numbers if you are alone?”.
In short, very clear ideas and a single great objective, to export the Italian and Neapolitan spirit: “Italian music must go out and go into the world. And it shouldn’t be done with mathematics. I think Maradona, when he shot from midfield, didn’t know he was scoring. He just did it”.
