CATANIA – Confesercenti Catania, in view of the closure of Piazza Federico II di Svevia, carried out undauntedly by the municipal administration led by Mayor Trantino – after various meetings with residents of the area, with traders and with trade associations in which, however, a linear agreement was never reached on what to do – a proposal was registered which provides for the partial closure of the area and only in specific time slots. Residents and traders in the area also fully supported Confesercenti Catania’s decision, complete with signature collection.
“It is no longer a time for ideological battles – declares the provincial director of Confesercenti, Francesco Costantino – but the announced pedestrianization of Piazza Federico II di Svevia undoubtedly poses practical difficulties for traders and residents, who undoubtedly require greater coordination for a different solution and which leads to a gradual pedestrianization of the square”.
“Certainly in the long term the closure of the square will bring benefits to the catering activities involved – adds Andrea Finocchiaro, president of Fiepet Catania – but the same will not be obvious for the commercial activities that exist in the square. Pedestrianization is welcome, but let’s do it seriously, gradually and without leaving anyone behind. We have worked on a concrete and serious proposal which we have already registered for the attention of the municipal administration, hoping for an urgent meeting to seriously address the issue for the good of all the entrepreneurs involved”.
