Bergamo. Beyond 4000 people participated this morning in Bergamo at the event that CGIL, Cisl And Uil provincials organized on the occasion of the Workers Day.

The May Day procession wound through the streets of the lower city to reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto where, on stage, the general secretaries of the Bergamo trade unions took turns: Marco Toscano (CGIL), Francesco Corna (CISL) e Pasquale Papaianni (Uil). These illustrated the themes and demands identified for this year’s May Day: Europe, Peace, Work and social justice.

The three delegates then spoke, Giacomo d’Amelio (CISL School) Domenico Bottone (Uil) e Olga Bonazzithe latter representing the workers of Trèvesthe company of Fuck Sant’Andrea for which layoffs and closure are expected. It was the employees of the Serian textile company who opened the procession that started from Piazzale Marconi. Tomorrow – Thursday May 2 – the unions will meet the owners at a summit in Confindustria.

“I have been working for 36 years now for a company in Cazzano Sant’Andrea which, after changing various names, is now called Trèves Italia, and since 2021 it has been entirely owned by a large multinational group – begins Bonazzi -. And it was precisely with the change of ownership that the problems began: in a concise manner we were informed that the order had arrived from France to close the Cazzano plant to move all production to the Aprilia plant which, according to them, will save money. in transport costs, being closer to the client Stellantis’ factories in Melfi, Pomigliano and Cassino”.

“Then we realized that the work done and all the production completed from February until now was aimed at creating a warehouse stock so that we could then easily close the company in July and move the machinery – he continues -. We feel cheated.”

The interventions began around 11 and ended around noon. Also present below the stage was the centre-left mayoral candidate Elena Carnevali.

The closing of the event was instead entrusted to Ugo Ducigeneral secretary CISL Lombardy: “Work is the foundation of the Republic, born from the struggle for liberation from Nazi-fascism. For this reason, today, like April 25th and June 2nd, is also a celebration of our democracy. Europe which has unfortunately returned to war for two years, unleashed by a bloody and imperialist autocrat against a sovereign, free and democratic country. The European Union must play a leading role in negotiations that lead to a just peace as soon as possible. Equally, Europe must have a strong role to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, paving the way for the only possible solution, that of two states for two peoples. There is a need for a new pro-European beginning, to build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice”.
