The ‘Pop Giorgia’ mural, the provocative work representing Giorgia Meloni in the Marlyn Monroe version, created by the artist aleXsandro Palombo in Milan, was vandalized. On the mural, an You consider yourself pro-life but you leave immigrants to die at sea”. The work was created on a column in Via Montenapoleone at the corner of Corso Giacomo Matteotti two days ago, on 29 April, immediately after the announcement of the prime minister’s candidacy for the European elections.

Meloni was depicted as Marilyn Monroe in the iconic pose with the cocktail dress ‘The Subway dress’, which lifts up in the film ‘The Seven Year Itch’ and reveals a pair of underwear with the European flag.

“You cannot contest the ideas and thoughts of others by destroying art, culture or any other means of civil expression. This cannot be a tolerable formula nor can we get used to this wave of violence from individualistic exasperations. And it doesn’t matter whether it affects left-wing or right-wing thinking, culture and freedom of expression must be a collective heritage to be preserved, art remains a powerful means with which we can improve society, encourage sharing and reflection”, this is how the artist commented on the act of vandalism. “I would invite the vandals of the algorithm to open more books and to go to museums to study and not to deface, because it is the only way they have if they want to survive themselves,” added Palombo.

It is not the first work by Palombo to be vandalized, in fact, it has already happened five times: for example last January on the mural of the Simpsons in Auschwitz, created on the external walls of the Shoah Memorial, the writing W Hitler also appeared.

In May Palombo had portrayed Prime Minister Meloni together with the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein, pregnant shoulder to shoulder, with ‘Not for rent’ on the Prime Minister’s lap and on Schlein’s the writing ‘My uterus my choice’.
