Two hundred “actors” from Lucca will star in the film Tower Stories for one night, for a metacinema experiment that will then become a real scene. This is what happened on Tuesday evening in Piazza San Francesco, in the heart of the historic center of Lucca which for a few weeks has been the open-air set of Peter Greenaway’s new film starring Oscar-winning actors Dustin Hoffman and Helen Hunt.
On Monday, the production companies Facing East and The Family launched this public event, “calling out” the people of Lucca through the Municipality’s communication channels. In less than 24 hours, over a thousand requests arrived, demonstrating the attention that the filming has been attracting in the city for weeks. In the end, about two hundred of these requests were granted. On Tuesday evening the meeting was held in Piazza San Francesco, where the installation conceived by Greenaway and created by the Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca Foundation in 2013 was re-enacted “The Towers | Lucca Hubris” which was created to celebrate the restoration of the church of San Francesco, through suggestive projections on the façade. It was on that occasion that Peter Greenaway wrote the screenplay for the film Tower Stories.
On the sides of the square there was a crowd of onlookers, who were able to breathe in the atmosphere of the set directed by a Hollywood production. Also in the square was Greenaway, who followed the shooting with the utmost attention. Around 10.30pm a downpour led to the temporary suspension of the work, which however lasted only a few minutes. In the end, a great emotion and an experience to tell for the selected people from Lucca, actors for a night.
