Four hours in the emergency room at the Polyclinic with fever and diarrhea“but without even a blanket.”

It was around two o’clock yesterday when a 52-year-old woman arrived at the emergency room in via Campi. According to what her mother reported, she had a fever of 39 degrees and had lost a lot of fluids.

“After two and a half hours she still hadn’t received treatment of any kind because there were many people – said the mother – A physiological solution would have been enough to replenish her fluids”.

The mother has raised criticism for the care her daughter received. «They didn’t have blankets to make her feel less of the freezing sensation that high fever gives her – he added – I wonder: have they already changed the wardrobes that don’t have a wool blanket to give to a person who is shivering from the cold and is he sick? Is it possible that the Polyclinic doesn’t have blankets available for cases of this kind or similar situations? It’s a shame».

The mother claimed an action in favor of her daughter. «After my phone call, a nurse used three sleepers to give relief to my daughter – she explained – The relief lasted until they put ice on her head because the temperature had risen to 39.5 degrees. However, hydration began after the visit and the x-rays, therefore well after six in the morning.”

The reply
When questioned on the point, theModena University Hospital he replied on the matter. «The patient was promptly evaluated at triage with the assignment of a green code – the reply – and was taken care of by the emergency room professionals. During the wait she was re-evaluated several times by the nursing staff who took care of measuring her vital parameters, which always remained normal despite the fever persisting. The patient was looked after and assisted adequately in meeting the needs she expressed.”

With regards to the blankets, the health company announced that «the patient reported the presence of allergies to various drugs, including some antipyretics, which directed the health workers towards a therapeutic strategy that involved the reduction of the feverish condition also through heat dispersion , applying ice and not constipating the patient with blankets which would lead to excessive thermal insulation”.

The Polyclinic specified that both the treatment and assistance given to the woman were “appropriate”. The second must include “diagnostic imaging and laboratory services” before discharge.

The company underlined its constant commitment “to guaranteeing the best possible service, respecting the different urgency priorities, even on difficult evenings”. «The staff is sorry that the patient felt any discomfort – we read at the end – and wishes her a speedy and complete recovery».
