Journey of Remembrance, Aned Savona-Imperia: “Paying homage to the victims of Nazi-fascism”

Savona. The Journey of Remembrance organized by the ANED Section (National Association of former deportees to Nazi camps) of Savona-Imperia will take place from 2 to 6 May 2024 and will see the participation of students from the secondary schools of the two provinces who won the ANED 2024 Competition.

As in previous years, the students created numerous works on the topic of political and racial deportation: in particular, this year the participants were asked to develop specific research on the presence and treatment of Jewish artists in the camps; on political deportation following the strikes of March 1944; and on Operation T4, the extermination of the physically and mentally ill and the disabled (in particular those suffering from Down’s syndrome) which took place between 1939 and 1941 by SS doctors, a tragedy which had its main center in the Castle of Hartheim.

On Sunday 5 May, the delegation of the Savona-Imperia Section, led by President Simone Falco and Deputy Vice President Jacopo Marchisio, will participate in the International Ceremony to commemorate the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp of Mauthausen, the last concentration camp liberated, on 5 May 1945 , by the allied troops, also an opportunity to remember the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Europe from Nazi-fascist domination.

“The Journey of Remembrance aims to have two purposes – we read in a note -: the first, that of paying homage to all the victims of Nazi-fascism deported and murdered in the concentration camp system (among which Dachau will be visited, the first camp established already in following Hitler’s arrival in power, Gusen, Ebensee, Hartheim Castle and Mauthausen), telling the students about the sacrifice and resistance of the deportees, underlining how the survivors were able, at the end of the conflict and imprisonment, to give life to free Europe of Peoples prefigured in extraordinary documents such as the Mauthausen Oath; the second, to reflect on how barbarism affected our territory: the over 40 thousand political deportees included those who on the morning of 1 March 1944 joined the strike called by the CLN Alta Italia, ending up deported (with a conscious choice of commitment, since they were threatened of retaliation) and often killed, including many citizens, workers and resisters from the provinces of Savona and Imperia”.

“The response of the workers through the strike to the Nazi-fascist oppression made a significant contribution to the “final blow” to the occupier; even foreign media reported it at the time, such as Radio London and the New York Times: ‘All these agitations can be called Civil Resistance because they are unarmed. Among the workers, the population of the cities, the arrested peasants, no weapons were ever found. When they try to justify the heinous crimes committed by the Nazi-fascists, they say that “we were at war”. The Nazi-fascists, in fact, were at war against an unarmed population, tired of harassment, torture and criminal murders. The delegation from Savona and Imperia will also be accompanied, in the laying of wreaths at the memorials in the various fields, by the Mayor of Finale Ligure Ugo Frascherelli, by the Secretary of the CGIL of Savona Andrea Pasa, by the Councilor of the Municipality of Loano Enrica Rocca and by the former Mayor of Vado Ligure Monica Giuliano, as well as representatives of the relatives of the Aned and the Anpi Sections of the Province. The Gonfalonei from the Province of Savona and the Municipality of Finale Ligure will be present in the parade on Sunday 5 May”.

Aned thanks and applauds the members of the commission who evaluated the winning entries.
