May 1st in the name of tradition in Cocullo where the “Rite of the Serpari” will return, in honor of San Domenico Abate. It all begins with the serpents who go to the mountains in search of snakes at the end of March. Once captured, they are carefully kept in wooden boxes (in ancient times in terracotta containers) for 15-20 days, feeding them with live mice and hard-boiled eggs.

This custom would be linked to the pagan rites of the Marsi, an ancient Italic people. In contemporary times it is celebrated in honor of San Domenico who is considered a protector from toothache, reptile bites and rabies. San Domenico was a Benedictine monk from Foligno who crossed Lazio and Abruzzo founding monasteries and hermitages. In Cocullo he stopped for seven years, leaving one of his teeth and a horseshoe from his mule, which have become relics.
