The Municipality of Verona established the Green Council for the first time: «It is a historic day»

The establishment of a “Green Council” and the related regulation was approved on Tuesday 30 April by the municipal council. «An important innovation for the Municipality – they explain from Palazzo Barbieri – which until now had never had one, for a further step towards greater and continuous attention to the protection of the environment and the valorisation of public and private green areas in the area Veronese. In fact, among the aims is to protect natural resources, preserve the landscape, the natural heritage and enhance the social formations present in the area. All this to promote an urban culture of greenery by actively involving citizens and local associations.”

According to the announcements, all of this will therefore be taken care of by the Consulta, i.e. a representative body responsible for «proposing, examining and discussing the most complex or delicate projects regarding public and private green areas, encouraging civic participation and dialogue between the various local realities interested in protecting the environment and promoting environmental sustainability in Verona”. The document will now be examined by the City Council for the final green light, expected for mid-May.

«It is a historic day for the Municipality of Verona – said the councilor for gardens and street furniture Federico Benini -. The Consulta will be made up of Amia, agronomists, foresters, but above all the associations and committees that deal with greenery in our municipality, to express guidelines for the management of public greenery together with the Municipality. A fundamental body, which has already obtained the green light from all eight constituencies, and which will also be an aid and guidance tool for the administration itself, for an increasingly greener and more environmentally friendly city” .

The internal regulations of the Council define its composition, functions and objectives, including support for the municipal administration in determining policies regarding urban greenery, the collection of citizens’ reports and ideas, but also the expression of opinions on projects and initiatives related to the protection of natural and landscape heritage. The Council will also be able to form temporary or permanent working groups on specific issues, involving competent municipal administrators and sector experts to enrich the debate and decisions.
