«I ran to advance values of inclusion»

Andrea Cegna is also among the Brescian candidates for the next European elections. Eleventh in the list of the North Western constituency of the Green Left Alliance, Andrea Cegna is forty-two years old, he was born in Legnano, he grew up in the Milan area but has been resident in Brescia for some time with a son (born in Brescia). By profession freelance journalist (he also collaborates with Radio Onda d’Urto, for which he is also a party volunteer, Radio Popolare, Il Manifesto and other publications).

«I am a citizen of the world — he smiles —. I also happened to write about Latin America, Europe and Italy, sometimes also for Mexican and Catalan newspapers. I have produced podcasts, organized festivals and hundreds of concerts, and so I have gone through the struggles of entertainment workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Globetrotter for work (he is currently in Barcelona, but in a few days he will be back in Brescia), he is certainly quite well known in the alternative left movement circles. Her candidacy defines it as service: for the world of entertainment, for temporary workers and also for Ilaria Salis.

«One vote does not change the world – he states – but one vote, the only truly useful one on 8 and 9 June, could be worth the release of Ilaria Salis. On June 10th I would like to celebrate his release. And why not my election.”

He knows it won’t be easy and that the The first obstacle for the Green Left Alliance will be to overcome the 4% barrier (polls today give it around 4.5%) after which the list is full of marketable names, including – in addition to Ilaria Salis – also Ignazio Marino, Massimiliano Smeriglio, Benedetta Scuderi, Mimmo Lucano and Giovanni Mori from Brescia (in sixth position), former national spokesperson for Fridays for Future. But, having said this, preferences (yes there are, the price lists are not locked down, and up to three can be expressed) can overturn the rankings.

«Is my election a pure utopia? – he claims -. As Eduardo Galeano said, utopia is like the horizon: I walk two steps, and it moves away two steps. I walk ten steps, and he walks away ten steps. The horizon is unattainable. So what is utopia for? To this: it is used to continue walking.” He fears that the next European Parliament could be one of the worst: «So we have to put your face on it, bring values of inclusion, of rejection of racist and fascist policies».
