“The most beautiful Constitution in the world, our Constitution, establishes that ITALY IS A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC FOUNDED ON WORK.
WORK, the cornerstone of the social contract of this country, has instead been distorted, subjected, transformed into a courtesy (if not a handout) of the powerful in power: reduced to a mere instrument of capital for the achievement of maximum profit at all costs .
A parable, that of the world of work, which in recent decades has increasingly erased all the achievements of the Workers’ Movement of the last century, crushing the Workers’ Statute and reducing it to mere waste paper.
It is the same cultural approach towards the noble concept of WORK that has been overturned, almost leading us to consider it an established fact that the right to one’s own livelihood and to carry out one’s aptitudes and abilities (AS THE CONSTITUTION LAID DOWN!) can be implemented only and exclusively under the conditions determined by those who hold the pawns of economic power.
WORK understood as servitude and DIGNITY erased.
With the consequent cancellation of all protection, first of all the guarantee of WORKING SAFELY.
From explosions in power plants, to workers mowed down on tracks, falling into elevator shafts, crushed in ports or in looms, and so on: in a daily massacre that can NEVER be traced back to chance, because in almost all situations it involves the same dynamics which are proposed again, as evidence of an unpunished and consolidated system where no one cares to control, monitor and sanction.
In the given conditions then, what words should we use for this MAY FIRST WORKERS’ DAY, without risking falling into empty rituality?
Someone said: WORKERS OF ALL THE WORLD UNITE!
Let’s start from here, from SOLIDARITY and FIGHT, in the awareness that only the unity of all workers will allow us to recover lost rights and to always move forward, towards new conquests”
