Tonino Russo, General Secretary of CISL Calabria: bridge over the Strait, important to connect high-speed rail to the South. Region convene table to reconsider and speed up public transport.
«The construction of the bridge over the Strait – Tonino Russo, Secretary General of CISL Calabria writes in a note – is, as CISL claims, a very important work. Precisely for this reason, the Government must also commit to connecting high-speed rail to the South, accelerating the processes affecting rail transport across the entire territory in Calabria. During the hearing in the Parliamentary Commission on fiscal federalism, Svimez was clear: “The first question is that, if the objective is to make effective the principle of equal dignity of access to services for citizens and businesses throughout the national territory , LEP and infrastructural equalization should be fully recognized in national legislation regardless of the so-called differentiated autonomy”.
“If – Svimez further stated – the LEPs have the ultimate aim of guaranteeing uniform levels of services across the national territory, as well as their precise definition and financing, it would be necessary to proceed, at the same time, with the leveling of the infrastructural facilities between territories, a necessary condition to allow decentralized administrations to provide adequate levels of services”. Svimez herself added that “on the infrastructural equalization front we can only talk about setbacks”.
Therefore – continues Russo – it is decisive, for development purposes, to finally unite the country from North to South with high-speed rail, eliminating that infrastructural gap between the different areas which strongly penalizes our region and the entire South. This also applies to the strengthening of the Port of Gioia Tauro: the construction of the Santomarco tunnel is fundamental for the Tyrrhenian-Ionian freight route.
As we have repeatedly highlighted – concludes the Secretary General of the Calabrian CISL – the issue of mobility must also be addressed to free internal areas from isolation: therefore, we will ask the Region to convene a table to reconsider local public transport in Calabria, because the connections by any means, starting with those between the capital cities, are faster, also with the aim of discouraging the use of one’s own transport”.
