WEDDING STORIES Portraits of immigration in the Milan Barrier in Turin

The exhibition is open to the public from 1 May 2024

and will be open to visitors until September 29, 2024

The programming of Flashback Habitat Ecosystem for Contemporary Cultures continues with the intention of intertwining art and life.

The new exhibition Wedding Storiesconceived and created by the artistic director Alessandro Bulgini, tells of this bond by creating a sweet and delicate fresco of the people who lived and live in the Barriera di Milano. The portraits of immigration in the Barriera in Turin speak to us of life lived but also of the present moment, with an eye always turned to the future, made up of dreams and possibilities.

The exhibition is open to the public from 1 May 2024 until 29 September 2024 in the spaces of Corso Giovanni Lanza 75.

The physical and geographical movement from south to north contains all the hope and desire for new beginnings. Wedding Stories it is a magnifying glass on a neighborhood, the most populous, lively and stratified in Turin: Milan barrier.

Here we find the universality of the story, the history of the West from the post-war period to today, the migration of entire populations seeking new opportunities, a turning point that only the modernity of metropolitan cities can promise.

Among the many possibilities to tell this story, personal and collective at the same time, a significant moment was chosen for these people who, full of new hopes and with the first resources achieved, can realize a dream: the marriage. Communities rebuild themselves in the image and likeness of their territories of origin, recreating their own world; as in all nomadisms, you bring your own traditions and roots with you.

Wedding Storiesas the title suggests, is the representation of a specific moment in life, told through photographic language. Images of powerful beauty evoke all the tenderness and emotion of an unforgettable moment.

From silver prints to portraits with a sepia patina, from black and white to the advent of colour: the history of photography is the protagonist together with the stories of weddings. Photography becomes, over time, an essential source and witness of the union not only between two people, but also between two family groups. The shots on display accompany us in the evolution of the medium and the techniques used since the 1950s, when ceremonies were a real official celebration and even the wait for the photo album was exciting. The spouses pose solemnly, sometimes with a serious expression, to underline the formality of the event. The attention to detail, from the dresses to the floral arrangements to the complicit glances of the bride and groom, is entrusted to professionals. At the time, in fact, the camera was a privileged tool and photographers, experts in the medium, were called upon to preserve the memory of a great family event forever. It was a great responsibility, and a privilege for few.

The history of photography evolves and leads us to the present, to an era in which the wedding is an increasingly informal event, more easily digitized and immortalized not only by photographers, but by all the guests.

Wedding Stories confirms our interest in the relationship between art and life and was born as a pretext to talk about immigration in the Barriera neighborhood of Milan. Among the many experiences conducted in recent years in Turin, entirely dedicated to the Barriera district of Milan, once again the choice falls on a part of the city that is highly representative for its cultural mix – Alessandro Bulgini.

The exhibition was also imagined as a project in progress divided into two acts.

The first with inauguration on April 30ththe second with inauguration on June 27.

In the second act the exhibition will also talk about today, about the second immigration, so it will also be possible to follow the course of the history of photography as it evolves as well as the history of marriages. Customs change over time, new migrations bring new rites, new customs, new faces, but also new hopes.

In its characteristic of an exhibition in progress an exhibition hall of the exhibition it will be interactive and dedicated to the involvement of the protagonists of the weddings who, every day, will be able to entrust a memory, a photo of their wedding.

The result will be the construction of a collective, shared, choral photo album.

This exhibition is about people and human relationships; of art and life.

Without having to travel far, you just need to look around to discover and rediscover the complex and multifaceted picture of a city, of a neighborhood, of those who have lived it and still live it, composing an anthropological and customs portrait.
