Press conference by Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO, ahead of the extraordinary Heads of State meeting.

“NATO member states have different assessments of the threat posed by Moscow,” writes the Wall Street Journal. “NATO is preparing for a conflict with Russia, but Western experts call a Russian “direct invasion” of a member state unlikely in the near future – the publication adds – the options of a Russian attack are also being evaluated, not this one year, but in the next few years, as some NATO military officials suggest that Moscow could be strong enough to launch an attack in a few years.”
“There is also a second option, the publication reports, citing its sources: Russia could provoke conflicts in neighboring countries, hence the greater urgency for NATO to prepare for coalition war. For similar reasons, in 2024 NATO will conduct its largest exercise since 1988, Steadfast Defender.”

WSJ, as is normal in our work, collects informal indications from the chancelleries, in particular, in this situation, also and above all from the NATO leaders in Brussels. Indications resulting from a precise strategy of pure psychological terrorism, which has the aim of keeping tension high and above all the turnover of the arms factories. Indeed, Secretary Stoltenberg, whose behavior is ethically reprehensible, states: “The situation is difficult, but it is not too late for Ukraine to prevail” over Russia, underlining that “it is important to return to Kiev again and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.” On X Stoltenberg promises that “further support is on the way.” Furthermore, “NATO is making a long-term commitment, putting Ukraine on an irreversible path towards the Alliance”, he writes in a post.
“NATO allies did not keep what they promised” to Ukraine. “The United States went months without agreeing on a package for Ukraine and European allies did not deliver the promised amount of ammunition,” says Stoltenberg.

“This had serious consequences on the battlefield – he continues – the lack of ammunition allowed the Russians to advance”. “The lack of an air defense line made it possible for more Russian missiles to hit the targets – he says – the lack of “long-range shooting” capabilities allowed the Russians to concentrate more forces. Now we see the consequences. It is extremely important that in the last two weeks we have seen some very important changes: the big US announcement of $61 billion is really significant; the UK announced its largest package ever, including air defenses and millions of rounds of ammunition; many other allies come forward with different types of announcements. Now our responsibility is to ensure that these announcements turn into actual deliveries, physical deliveries or weapons and ammunition, as soon as possible.”

“The commander of US forces in Europe is responsible for this logistical work – continues Stoltenberg – the practical implementation of the delivery of ammunition and weapons to Ukraine. I’m in regular contact with him and he’s very aware of the urgency – they do everything they can to make sure the ads turn into deliveries as quickly as possible, because time matters, every day counts. We have to be honest and we have to realize that when we don’t deliver, when we delay supplies, it’s a matter of life and death, which has real consequences. When we don’t get the results we should, it’s the Ukrainians who pay the price,” he says. “I am clear: if allies find themselves having to choose between meeting NATO capability objectives or supporting Ukraine, they should support Ukraine” by sending weapons and “putting plans in place to replenish their stockpiles”, because “the stocks can be replenished and will be replenished, but the lives lost can never be recovered”, says the general secretary of NATO in a press conference.

“To replenish our stockpiles we need to produce more, so I am pleased that allies are stepping up defense production. The allies – he continues, addressing Zelensky – have listened to his clear appeal and have agreed to intensify our support. We welcome the fact that the United States has now approved a major new package providing more than $60 billion in aid, including air defense assets and artillery ammunition.” “The United Kingdom – he adds – has just announced its largest delivery ever, including dozens of combat boats, hundreds of vehicles, thousands of missiles and millions of rounds of ammunition. Germany will deliver an additional Patriot system, the Netherlands will contribute another 4 billion euros. Other allies are evaluating what more they can do, and I expect to see new announcements soon. We are working hard to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs.”

“The right place for Ukraine is in NATO. Ukraine will become a member of NATO. The work we are undertaking now puts you on an irreversible path towards NATO membership,” she reiterates. “The allies – she states – have already agreed to plan a greater role for NATO in coordinating security assistance and training for Ukraine. I believe we also need a major multi-year financial commitment, to sustain our support and demonstrate that our support for Ukraine is not short-term and ad hoc, but long-term and predictable. Moscow must understand that it cannot win and cannot wait for us to get tired,” she concludes.
And all we have to do is raise our voices once again to denounce to public opinion the criminal maneuvers of those who, without thinking about the consequences, i.e. a probable nuclear escalation, to increase the turnover of the weapons factories while quietly sending thousands to their deaths of young people (for now Ukrainians but in their intentions very soon also French, Italians, Germans).
